The coronavirus pandemic has put all Samford events to a halt, including the spring theatre productions. This semester Samford Theatre planned to present “Into the Woods,” and Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” this semester. Due to campus being closed the rest of the semester, these two productions have been pushed to the fall semester.
Samford Theatre announced on Instagram that “Into the Woods” will be the Fall Opera presentation on Nov. 19-22. Sophomore musical theatre student Ben Reardon explained what has happened to rehearsals at this time.
“All rehearsals have been postponed,” he said,“We now will rehearse next fall semester and open as well.”
Reardon also said that the theatre faculty and staff are working hard to keep classes engaging and relevant during this time of online instruction.
“Our dance instructor Lindsay Troha, has done a phenomenal job keeping our dance classes relevant so that we don’t fall out of practice during quarantine,” Reardon said,“She’ll send us videos with combinations to learn or just to write a thoughtful response on and we’ll submit them later in the week.”
Reardon also said that while this situation is not ideal, the faculty have taken major steps to make the best of the situation.
“I consider quarantine in part to be a gift of time,” said Reardon,“So I’ve been balancing taking time for myself finding plenty of ways to stay creative.”
Samford Theatre posted on Instagram a dedication to the seniors who planned to graduate this spring.
“Thank you for your strength, resilience, humor and heart,” they stated. “As this year comes to an unexpected close, we know all of you will grow through this season of loss and will exceed in each path you take from here on.”
