While the school year is crammed full of fun events, clubs and activities to keep a Samford student busy, a summer in Birmingham can leave you wondering what there is to do. While seen as a quiet city, Birmingham is full of a rich food scene, culture and outdoor activities to help you have a delightful summer.

Spots to Munch and Crunch

Looking for a place to enjoy a meal or a coffee as you hit that internship grind? Some favorite Birmingham Metro restaurant spots are Taco Mama, Soho Social, Real & Rosemary, Ono Poké and Social Taco. Sure to satisfy your craving, these places are great for a meal on the go or a nice outing with friends.

For a hidden gem, Blue Sushi Sake Grill has a fantastic happy hour special for dinner.

To avoid a caffeine withdrawal headache, since we all know you’ve been drowning in coffee since August, try Cala, Seeds, Honest, June, Baba Java or Caveat coffee shops!

For Some Culture

Birmingham is also full of a rich array of historic places and cultural activities to explore. For a lesson on Birmingham History, make a stop at the Civil Rights Institute.

Interested in building up your artistic knowledge? Try visiting the Birmingham Museum of Art. (Fun fact: Some exhibitions are free!)

For an increase in your scientific faculties, give the McWane Science Center a try. Full of fun and interactive ways to learn about the natural world, this is a great place to go by yourself or with the kids you are babysitting.

Are you a fan of classical music? The Cathedral of Saint Paul hosts a free downtown concert series. The next upcoming event is an organ performance by Bruce Ludwick on Sunday, May 18. Or are you more of a Swiftie meets Josiah Queen? Checkout Iron City’s website for upcoming concerts and live music.

Outdoor Activities

One of Birmingham’s strong suits is the plethora of outdoor activities it offers. If you are a granola guy or girl, this is your place!

If hiking is your jam, head to Red Mountain Park, Rufner Mountain or Moss Rock Preserve for beautiful views of Birmingham’s rolling hills.

Fishing fan or looking for a swim? One of Birmingham’s hidden gems is Cahaba River. This is sure to make for a fun day with friends.

If you are trying to stay active or looking to make more friends, try a summer sports league! From volleyball, track, soccer, tennis, or frisbee, Birmingham has it all.
