HOMEWOOD, Ala. – Samford was outmatched, outplayed and out coached again this weekend in a 40-13 loss.
The Bulldogs hosted The Citadel on Saturday, looking to rebound against a Southern Conference opponent. The Bulldog v Bulldog matchup has historically favored Samford, who entered the game with a 6-2 home record against The Citadel since joining the SoCon.
Despite that edge, Samford struggled offensively and that decided the fate of the game.
Quarterback Quincy Crittenton threw for more than 300 yards but was intercepted three times, including twice in the red zone.
Wide receiver Preston Bird fumbled on a screen pass that was returned for a touchdown, and special teams gave up another score after a botched fake field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. Combined with two interceptions that set up field goals, those miscues accounted for a 20-point swing in The Citadel’s favor.
The ground game never found momentum, as Samford managed just 60 rushing yards and averaged 2.1 yards per carry.
There were a few bright spots statistically. Receiver Jaden Gibson hauled in nine passes for 91 yards, while Bird added nine catches for 65 yards. On defense, Jaden Mosley led the team with 11 tackles. But Samford will need to find ways to get these guys in the end zone if they want to turn their season around.
Samford travels to Waco, Texas, next week to face Baylor at 11:00 AM.
