The Samford Student Government Association (SGA) is gearing up for its spring elections, which are set to take place on Monday, March 23. Run-offs, if necessary, will take place on Wednesday, March 25.
This week, the current Student Executive Board (SEB) will be tabling in the University Center on March 18. There will also be a meet and greet with this election’s candidates in Harry’s Coffeehouse from 3-4 p.m. on March 19.
The positions up for election this spring are each of the positions on the SEB (President and the Vice Presidents for Senate, Events and Campus Relations), as well as class officers and senators.
Information regarding the specifics of each position can be found online, in the SGA Code of Laws.
With campaigning beginning this week, students are encouraged to learn more about the positions and the candidates running for them so that they can inform their votes ahead of the election next week.
“You know, closed mouths don’t get fed,” said Tshibangu, the current Vice President for Senate. “If you don’t know, ask. Whether you’re asking folks who are campaigning or asking folks who are already in SGA, it doesn’t hurt.”
Students can find information on the SGA website, within the Code of Laws or by speaking to campaigning candidates. And, of course, in addition to researching, students are encouraged to vote.
“[The SEB], specifically in those elected positions, have direct contact with administration, and those lines of communication are open and encouraged to have,” said Holden Keel, the current Vice President of Campus Relations. “You should care who those people are. There are a lot of things that we’ve worked on trying to change, and we want the support of students in those as well. Voting is a part of that.”
The SGA puts in hard work to make Samford a better place for its students, so it’s important for students to be aware of who they want to put in office, and why.
“Go out and vote. Voting is important,” said Tshibangu. “You want to make sure that, whoever you’re putting in office represents you all, your values or your beliefs well.”
