Samford’s Study Abroad program is an opportunity in which Samford students are able to travel to different countries and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Samford Global Engagement states, “Samford’s commitment to providing international programs to its students stems from the school’s mission to nurture persons in the development of intellect, creativity, faith, and personhood.”
Not only is Samford committing to providing international programs to nurture student’s personal development, but study abroad programs have the ability to provide major benefits for the student and their education.
According to Samford’s Global Engagement Office, benefits include the ability to learn a new language, improve their professional and financial potential, a chance to experience other cultures and encounter career opportunities.
This past Jan Term, many Samford students had the option of traveling to Australia, Ireland, Great Britain, Italy or Israel. On the Australia trip, students were able to learn more about the culture and the residents there. They also saw different attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef and the Sydney Opera House.
Sophomore Rose Tarwater had the opportunity to travel to Australia and learn more about the country and its culture.
“Australia has always been on my list of places I wanted to travel,” Tarwater said.
Tarwater regarded the trip not only as a beautiful place to explore but as an amazing learning experience.
Another sophomore, Taylor Skipper, also visited Australia and was overwhelmed by the country’s beauty.
“Australia is also such a beautiful place that is so interesting to explore,” Tarwater. said
Tarwater was blown away by the country and its attractions and especially by locals friendliness.
“I was always experiencing something new on this trip. From seeing the Sydney Opera House to snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, I was constantly blown away by Australia,” she said. “I was surprised by how nice everyone was. They were always willing to give you directions or help you know what bus stop to get off at.”
Like Tarwater, Skipper also enjoyed the trip and had always wanted to go to Australia, and she felt that she would get more out of studying abroad than a place that was not on campus.
