On Wednesday, Sept. 15, the freshman class was abuzz about the elections for its  class officers. Students logged on to the Samford Portal to vote throughout the day, excited for their first chance to elect representatives for their class. They voted for President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Senators. A few days later, the Student Government Association announced the election results.

Freshmen students elected James Jefferson to serve as the Class President and Audrey Saunders to serve as the Class Vice President.

Saunders is a Business Management major from Alpharetta, Georgia. She said she is very excited to hold her first role in Samford’s Student Government Association.

“I’m planning to coordinate with our Class Council and Executives along with members of our freshman class to make this year the best first year of college we could ask for,” Saunders said. “I’m looking to plan one or two large events for our class to have a ton of fun as well as more laid-back opportunities to get to know each other better and form new connections throughout the year. I can’t wait to learn more about our class and make some incredible, unforgettable memories together!”

James Jefferson is a Law, Politics, and Society major from Louisiana. He has an array of previous experience in student government, including serving as Class President all four years of high school. He shared that his proudest moment was serving as the first African-American President of the Louisiana Association of Student Councils during the 2020-21 school year. These experiences have prepared Jefferson with a commitment and passion that he knows are essential qualities for a student leader.

“Being able to cultivate an environment that is inclusive for all students, while relentlessly serving and working for all students in the Samford community is my greatest hope for this year,” Jefferson said.

Jefferson said he is excited to be able to serve the Class of 2025 as its first Class President, and he is committed to making this year one to remember.
