Samford Quarterback Michael Hiers is thrilled to be back in the Birmingham area. The Briarwood Academy graduate always wanted to play for Samford, but was not given that opportunity until recently. Hiers graduated as Briarwood’s all time leader in passing yards, games passing touchdowns, and games started.

Michael is a great ball player, so it is definitely interesting as to why it took him so long to come home!

Hiers committed to play football at Murray State (FCS-KY) out of high school. He spent his first two years competing for the starting quarterback job, spot starting a couple games over those two years. After those two years, a coaching change promoted Michael to explore other opportunities. Michael would sign to play at Northwest Mississippi Community College. He dominated the Mississippi Junior College league, leading in both touchdowns and wins. His team went on to win the Mississippi State Championship and The junior college national championship. Michael knew he wanted to get back to competing at a division one level.

Heirs had always been on Samford’s “Radar”, said Head Football Coach Chris Hatcher. Hiers becoming available in the transfer portal was a win-win situation, given Samford’s Quarterback had graduated, leaving a vacancy in Samford’s powerful offense.

I spoke with Michael, although he didn’t have a ton of time, he told me, “I am very thankful for the opportunity to play close to home. Being close to my family and my beautiful girlfriend Kylie, as well as having the ability to eat a home cooked meal on the regular is something I look forward to too.”

Hiers Samford Career is off to a fast start. The team is currently 2-1, and welcomes Western Carolina this weekend as Socon play begins.
