On Oct. 20, Liz Truss made history when she resigned from her post as United Kingdom prime minister after only 45 days, the shortest term ever served.

Truss began her political career at age 19 by speaking at the U.K.’s Liberal Democrat conference calling for the abolition of the monarch system.

Truss became the U.K. ‘s prime minister and official leader of the Conservative party on Sept. 15. She succeeded Boris Johnson.

CNBC caught up with Truss outside of 10 Downing Street to hear her reason behind resigning.

“We set out a vision for a low-tax, high-growth economy that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit. I recognize though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to announce that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” Truss said.

Former finance minister Rishi Sunak took office as prime minister on Oct. 25 after Truss resigned. At 42 years old, he will be the youngest to take office as prime minister in 200 years. According to the Baltimore Sun, he aims to resolve economic issues resulting from Truss’s economic views and actions. “We will have to take difficult decisions to restore economic stability and confidence,” Sunak told the House of Commons according to a PBS.org article. “We will do this in a fair way.”
