Samford University’s Counseling and Wellness Center recently announced the addition of an anxiety support group.

The meetings began on Feb. 2 and will be held every Thursday night for the following five weeks. Anxiety group meetings will be at 5 p.m. in DBH 217. Any students who feels they would benefit from these meetings is welcome to attend.

University Counselor Susie-Hannah Williams will be conducting and overseeing the meetings, as well as offering advice and support for students who need it. Williams hopes that students will use this new group to help themselves.

“The counseling office wanted to provide an additional resource to Samford students. We know Samford students can benefit from tis additional source on managing anxiety,” Williams said.

For students who are concerned about confidentiality at these meetings, Williams hopes to ease their worries.

“We encourage privacy and confidentiality from the group,” Williams commented.

Each meeting will be focused on one or more coping skills for dealing with anxious thoughts and behaviors. Williams shared the objectives she hopes to reach through these meetings.

“The goal is to provide psychoeducation on anxiety and how these skills work to manage their anxiety and stress,” Williams said.

Williams also explained some of the coping skills that will be discussed and taught at some of the group meetings.

“[The group will be taught} breathing exercises, muscle relaxation techniques, and anxiety management skills,” Williams said.

For more information about this group, please stop by the Counseling and Wellness Office in DBH or contact Susie-Hannah Williams at swilli26@samford.edu.
