Taking care of the world around you is easier than you may think! If we all do our part, we can save the world.

Summer is quickly approaching and there is no better time to make a difference in the community while soaking up the summer sun. Practicing sustainability may seem like a daunting task but, in reality, it is easy to do! There are numerous places in the Birmingham area that are working together to go green and handle our world with care. Here is a list of 5 places you can serve at:

1. Greater Birmingham Humane Society

“Since 1883, our mission has remained the same – to promote the humane treatment of people and animals through education, advocacy and services.”

John Herbert Phillips is the founder of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society and was inspired to start this foundation after learning that it is important for children to be taught humane values. To serve with this organization, go to gbhs.org/mission and click volunteer.

2. Alabama Rivers Alliance

“Alabama Rivers Alliance is a statewide network of groups working to protect and restore all of Alabama’s water resources through building partnerships, empowering citizens, and advocating for sound water policy and its enforcement.”

To help their mission, you can either donate on their website or sign up to be a member. Go to alabamariveres.org to learn more.

3. The Nature Conservancy in Alabama

“From rare and endangered plants and animals to prairies, forests and the Gulf coast, The Nature Conservancy is working to protect Alabama for people and nature. Help us ensure a future in which people and nature can thrive.”

The Nature Conservatory is passionate about 3 things: Climate change, protecting the ocean, land and fresh water and providing food and water sustainably. To volunteer and be a nature ally, go to www.nature.org.

4. Cahaba River Society

“Cahaba River Society is an educator, expert resource, and collaborative partner working to protect and restore the Cahaba River watershed and its rich diversity of life.” Cahaba River society’s three goals are to inspire river stewardship, restore the river and have an impact on the environment. To donate or join a clean-up, visit cahabariversociety.org.

5. Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens

“The Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a mission-driven membership organization that seeks to protect, nurture, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens.” To become a friend, visit mtnbrookchamber.org.
