On August 27 at 6 p.m., tryouts were held looking for a new talent to wear the Sam suit.

The new Director of Marketing and Fan Engagement, Meghan-Grace Gibson, is eager to reinvent Sam starting with the tryout process.

The tryout process was held alongside the cheer team, as they would be working closely with who the future Sam would be. Through check-in and into the tryout, there was a panel of judges made up of the cheer, band, tickets, sponsors and sports departments. The contestants were judged based on availability, portrayal of emotion, enthusiasm, character definition and special skills.

Gibson stressed the importance of having Sam be a personality for Samford, not just a mascot who fills a role and the contestants came with personality. In each tryout, there was a dance to “YEAH!” by Usher. Each student embraced their special skills and displayed moves such as the worm and the splits.

Ultimately, the judges and staff picked their number one Sam with two understudies.

The goal of Sam this year is to assist the cheer team in all school spirit activities and give Samford a face to pair the University with athletics.

“When you think of school spirit, you think of cheer,” Gibson said.

Within the Homewood community, Sam strives to be an exciting figure that represents Samford.

Throwing unique moves and giving unforgettable moments while embodying school spirit is what Gibson hopes will encourage Samford students and the community to cheer on Samford in all their athletics.

Sam had his first debut of the season at the Samford versus Florida game.

“I’m excited to see Sam unite Samford and bring more school spirit,” said junior cheerleader Leah Rowland.

While Sam the mascot is not new, the talent in suit is, which brings new opportunities for athletics and school spirit.
