When Samford students discuss and debate theology or science on campus, they may not realize that one of their professors is shaping those same conversations across Christian academia. Samford professor Josh Reeves is now in that very position at one of the nation’s leading Christian academic journals, where he is able to bring a deeper perspective for faith-centered learning to campus.
Reeves, director of the Samford Center for Science and Religion, has recently been appointed to be co-editor for theology at the Christian Scholar’s Review, which is a nationally recognized academic journal that gives Christians in all disciplines an academic perspective for their faith.
Reeves said that his role at the Christian Scholar’s Review is a “gatekeeper of what gets published in terms of theology.”
Reeves graduated from Samford University in 1998 studying psychology and said that questions regarding faith and theology were always the most interesting to him. Reeves said that the Christian Scholar’s Review is great for any students who want to dig deep into the intersection of their faith and their discipline, whatever that may be.
“I think the journal helps professors think better, which in turn helps students in the classroom to have professors who have thought through these questions and these issues,” Reeves said.
Adam Winn, department chair of Biblical and Religious Studies, said that the Christian Scholar’s Review has been an influential resource at all three of the Christian higher education institutions he’s worked at.
“The fact that … he’s going to be reviewing the types of articles in theology that get included and maybe be able to influence some of those articles as far as editorial direction. I think that matters,” Winn said.
Winn also said that Reeves’ appointment is connected to the overall mission of Samford, and that he will be able to influence how theology is discussed and written about at this university and others across the country.
