Step Sing, a tradition that takes over the Samford Wright Center for four nights and live streams to nearly 70,000 fans around the rest of the world, is now taking on the silver screen. The Springs Cinema and Tap House in Atlanta will be playing Saturday night’s Sweepstakes show for friends, family and alumni.

“Our theater is simply creating a space for Samford alums to come watch together and enjoy our full kitchen and bar,” said Sara Dickens, the theater’s guest experience director.

Owned by Samford alumni, the privately owned theater encourages guests to show up early to reconnect with and celebrate their time at Samford and the tradition of Step Sing.

Atlanta alumna Erin McCubbin, class of ‘09, is looking forward to viewing Step Sing in this new format.

“I’m super excited. I’m bringing two friends who are also alumni. I’m curious to see wo else we’ll see there,” said McCubbin. “I typically watch it with a group of friends, not a big watch party, but we would watch the live stream.”

Samford uses watch parties across the southeast to bring alumni together.

“Samford University Alumni Association Watch Parties provide an opportunity for alumni and friends to fellowship with one another, reconnect with the university and participate in a Samford event or tradition while being away from campus,” said Meg Donovan, the assistant director of alumni chapters and clubs. “Watch Parties are a part of the many activities hosted through the Samford University Alumni Association each year.”

For McCubbin, Step Sing is her favorite tradition to keep up with alumni.

“It is just a predictable way to keep up with the school,” said McCubbin. “It is hard, as an alumnus, to make all that is happening around here. But my good friends and I still would watch Step Sing through the last day. I’msuper excited that my favorite little local theater is actually showing it live.”

Atlanta is not the only city getting to be a part of the festivities, though. The Alumni Association has chapters across the South. Cities such as Huntsville, Montgomery and Raleigh will host watch parties at the homes of various alumni while Nashville will also be filling a Regal Cinemas location.

The Birmingham area will host alumni on campus that couldn’t get a ticket by airing it live in The Caf.

No matter where you are in the world after your time at Samford, Step Sing is a tradition that doesn’t need to be forgotten, rather it can be the one thing that continues to bring the community together.
