The Global Engagement Office last week hosted information sessions on the study abroad programs offered to students.

There are three different study abroad programs students can choose from: faculty led, exchange and affiliate. Students have the option to go on study abroad programs during the fall, spring, Jan-term and summer.

A popular option is the Daniel House in London, England. The Daniel House recently underwent  a $2.5 million dollar renovation. Students can take SOA, Biblical Foundations or a nursing class in London. Programs are offered all year long at the Daniel House.

Students interested in learning a new language or growing their language skills can go on an exchange or affiliate abroad program. These programs include locations in Spain, France and Germany.

“Perfect for anyone who wants language fluency,” Alexis Whiting, a study abroad adviser, said.

In these programs, students attend a local university in the city they are living in.

“You’re in class with students from all over the world,” Jill Fisse, the assistant director of Global Engagement, said.

Last summer, sophomore Spanish and sociology major Maddie Goldberg went to Spain with Samford. Goldberg studied at the International Studies Abroad school in Seville, Spain.

“I believe that studying abroad is the cure to narrow-mindedness. It is one of the best ways to grow, not only academically, but in faith and character as well,” Goldberg said.

Students have allotted time during their study abroad program for free travel. Students can travel to other cities and countries around them.

Applications open on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and close on Friday, Dec. 6. Students can apply on the study abroad website, where they can also find  the application checklist. Students will be notified of their acceptance in February 2020.

Additional information sessions about the programs in Spain and France will be held on Oct. 4 and Oct. 10 at Harry’s Coffeehouse in the University Center. The Samford Abroad Fair is on Friday, Oct. 4 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. in Ben Brown. The Little London food truck and a gelato food truck will be at the fair. The Global Engagement Office is also hosting a tailgate during Family Weekend and Homecoming. They will serve high tea at the tailgates.

For additional information, students can go to the Global Engagement Office in Brooks 221. The office can be contacted at geo@samford.edu or 205-726-2741.
