School of the Arts faculty members, Chelsea Nicholson and Dean Joseph Hopkins will perform in Brock Recital Hall on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

According to the Samford Arts Directory website, Chelsea Nicholson is a Screen Actors Guild, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists actor, as well as a theatre educator. She has taught a variety of musical theatre and theatre courses at both Samford and the University of Montevallo.

Joseph Hopkins has served as dean of the School of the Arts for the past decade and founded the Harlaxton International Chamber Music Festival. He served on the faculty of the Operafestival di Roma in Rome, Italy, and had several notable performances. These performances include leading opera roles with the Operafestival, the Dallas Lyric Opera, Wildwood Opera Theatre soloist with the St. Petersburg State Orchestra, International Chamber Orchestra of Rome and the Moscow State Philharmonic.

The recital is in the second year, and when asked about what will be done this year, Nicholson gave insight on last year’s performance.

“Last year, we set out to explore the very specific theme of the crossover between musical theatre and opera,” Nicholson said.

Nicholson also said that the performance this year will be the same framework but different theme.

“We used a mixture of multimedia video and, of course, live performance,” she said. “A lot of recitals have no speaking at all, but we were having so much fun in rehearsals, we wanted to let the audience in on the conversations we were having so added the idea of a script and videos linking the songs together in which we are portraying heightened versions of ourselves.”
