On Feb. 11, Samford University’s Student Government Association passed a resolution that will change the Student Executive Board next school year.

SGA voted to eliminate the position of the Vice President for Development. SGA also voted to make amends to the Development branch within the Student Executive Board. The Development branch consists of a president, vice president and treasurer representing each class and Freshmen Forum.

“The current Vice President of Development will finish their term, but this will not be a position available for students to run for in the upcoming spring elections if the constitution change is passed by the student body,” SGA press secretariat Abbie Brown said in a press release.

Currently, the Vice President for Development is part of the Student Executive Board. The Vice President for Development manages training and development for class officers and Freshmen Forum. Freshman Forum is a leadership forum available to freshman students at the university. At the beginning of the fall semester, 40 freshmen are chosen to participate in the forum.

The responsibilities of the Vice President of Development will be divided among other members of the SGA. The Student Executive Board will be responsible for the Freshman Forum. The new role will be called Director of Freshman Forum.

“This gives more direct input and representation from the class officers/class council members due to a more direct chain of command to the SGA President all the way up to the University President,” SGA President Heath Padgett said.

This constitutional change will be voted on by the student body. SGA applications for elected positions for the next school year open on Feb. 24.

“All changes are being proposed now so that they would take effect in the upcoming election cycle,” Padgett said.
