The Samford Bulldogs (2-1) defeated the Western Carolina Catamounts (0-3) 42-37 on Saturday in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

This was the second win for the Bulldogs this year, and the first to come on the road. This was also the opening game for the Bulldog’s Southern Conference schedule.

The Bulldogs started off hot, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. Both came from the senior running back Demarcus Ware, who finished the game with 118 yards and three touchdowns.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs put up one more touchdown through Liam Welch’s favorite target, Montrell Washington, and the Catamounts put up ten points of their own. The score at halftime was 21-10.

That’s when WCU gave the Bulldogs a run for their money.

Five minutes into the half, WCU sacked Welch and forced a fumble, which was returned for a WCU touchdown. The Catamounts put up two more touchdowns in the third quarter along with the Bulldogs putting up one of their own. The Bulldogs were down heading into the fourth quarter losing 31-28.

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs struck first with another Montrell Washington touchdown. Just as the Catamounts were about to answer with a touchdown of their own, Chris Edmonds pulled in a one-handed interception in his own end zone, halting the Catamounts’ momentum. The Bulldogs finished the game on top, 42-37.

The Bulldogs next game will be against ETSU in Birmingham at 2 p.m. The game will also be broadcast on ESPN+.
