After leading the game for most of the match, Legion FC lost their first-ever home playoff match to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Sunday night.

Legion fans could only watch as Pittsburgh celebrated their win on their home field at Protective Stadium.

A 1-1 tie at the end of 90 minutes led to extra time, in which both teams scored an additional goal. Only penalties could decide the winner. After missing their first two shots, Legion FC rallied to tie Pittsburgh. But the Riverhounds would not be denied, converting their next three attempts to Birmingham’s two.

While Pittsburgh celebrated on Legion FC’s home field, fans could only watch in disbelief as their playoff dreams slipped away. Despite Birmingham’s 22 shots to Pittsburgh’s 7, Legion FC somehow lost their match in dramatic fashion. In front of a crowd of ten thousand, Legion FC was unable to advance at home.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC will advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the USL playoffs where they will take on number-one-ranked Louisville City FC.
