This past Thursday, March 30th, the freshmen and sophomore class presented the Spring Swing & Shop and had swing dancing, a pickleball set giveaway, Eugene’s Hot Chicken truck, and student vendors on the quad from 4-7 pm. This event brought lots of Samford students together to enjoy time with their friends before the semester ends.
The quad was electric with swing dancing in the middle as DJ Skippo played the music. There were about 12 student vendors selling artwork, thrifted clothing and jewelry. Also, there was a recess pickleball set raffle that was given away at the end of the night. Additionally, a Eugene’s Hot Chicken meal was free to the first 100 students.
The freshmen and sophomores on SGA and the student council have been working on this event for the last month, but they came up with the idea this past fall semester. There were six class officers and both student class councils working on the event, so a total of almost 20 people collaborated to bring the event to life. The freshmen and sophomores planned the event, but students from all classes were welcome to attend. In all, at least a couple hundred students attended the event.
There were a lot of diverse activities for the students to participate in at the Spring Swing & Shop. “I personally loved the swing dancing!” said Lindsey Dernavich, sophomore class vice president, “It is so much fun to just walk out of class or the library after a long day of school and just join all your friends who are out on the quad dancing.”
The event was lots of fun and had several students attend, according to Mary Alice Roe, the freshman class vice president. “I hoped that all the students had a great time and enjoyed time with their friends. Also, I hope they checked out all the student vendors and just saw what they have to offer, how talented their peers are, and how they can support them.” said Roe. Through this event and future events, Samford students hope to get exposure to their businesses while having fun with their friends.
“I love being able to give back to the Samford students and just support my fellow classmates,” said Roe. “I really love being able to think through ways to just provide them with fun opportunities to get plugged in.”
“I’ve been blown away by the freshman and sophomore classes with the amount of talent, how involved people are and just how excited people are to jump into things! It’s been great to see everyone join in on the fun and spend time together.” said Dernavich.
