After a historic season for Samford basketball, the Bulldogs will see a good chunk of their offensive production graduate or enter the transfer portal. Ques Glover, who averaged 14.7 ppg and was one of the team’s biggest stars, has gone portaling. Joining him are Jaron Rillie and Marcellus Vail, key bench pieces that have hurt Samford’s depth by leaving.
“I decided to transfer because I thought it was the best decision for me,” Vail said. “I just wanted to move closer to home and get to play closer to my family.”
Bubba Parham and Logan Dye, two senior leaders of the team, both graduated. Parham was inconsistent for the Bulldogs but began to shine later In the season. Dye, Samford’s all-time leading scorer, along with Ques Glover and Jermaine Marshall, won All-SoCon honors.
Marshall, a senior last year, has another year of eligibility if he chooses to return for a 5th season. Marshall averaged 13.3 points per game last year. But he’s not the only returner for the Bulldogs.
A.J. Staton-McCray, barring injury, has been a vital scorer for the team, and he is also expected to return along with backup center Achor Achor and forward Jaden Campbell. With their returns, Nathan Johnson and Brody Boyer will also be looking to grow in starring roles.
Furthermore, incoming freshmen Lukas Walls and Josh Holloway are highly touted as venerable replacements for Glover and Parham.
Over the past two years, Samford Basketball has seen some of the best play it has ever had. For the first time in program history, they consecutively achieved 20-win seasons. However, Coach Bucky McMillan has his work cut out for him, as many core players from the ’22 team have departed Homewood for good. However, with McMillan’s proven track record gathering talent from the portal, Samford basketball is in good hands.
