Before coming to Samford, Emily Ocello knew she wanted to be a part of a community that included her two of her favorite things.

“I needed to make this a thing, “saying Ocello, “I love to bake, and I love to play Mario Kart.”

Ocello expressed her passion for creating a club that would create an opportunity for having fun.

With Ocello expressing her desire to create the club, Ocello’s father decided to go half and half on a Nintendo Switch with her. Her roommate, Abigail Bell, decided to help after hearing her roommate’s passion and expressing her own excitement about having a club to join on campus.

“I have to make this happen,” said Ocello.

The two created a club in 2023, where people can snack on freshly baked cookies and compete in the video game Mario Kart. It was called Karts and Cookies.

Karts and Cookies is a club dedicated to bringing all diverse types of people together, including those who are shy about meeting new people and those well-known around campus. Allowing one space where everyone can be “incredibly competitive.”

The next club meeting will be held on Friday, Oct. 18. The club will be posting on its official Instagram at Karts and Cookies. Students who want to join should reach out to either Ocello or Bell to be added to the club’s GroupMe chat.

The club offers seasonal parties, including Halloween, Christmas and more. The club celebrated Valentine’s Day 2024 with a themed party.

Ocello shared how at the beginning of the journey, there were five to seven participants, but over time students shared their experience with multiple classmates, allowing the club to grow into the status it has now. The highest number of participants the club has seen is 40.

Meredith Brackstone, a second-year Journalism major, described the club as “the chillest thing ever,” and encouraged her classmates to visit for a meeting.

There are no requirements to enter, nor are there any mandatory services needed to be a part of the club.
