I have the privilege of being next year’s Editor-in-Chief for The Samford Crimson. If someone had told freshman me this fact, I would have been ecstatic that I reached the position of leading this super cool, new organization that I had just joined. If someone had told junior-in-high-school me fresh off of watching Gilmore Girls, I would have flipped my lid because there’s no way I’d actually be like Rory Gilmore.
In all seriousness, I am honored to hold this position. The Crimson has become an invaluable part of my Samford and college experience, and I have spent the past year dreaming up new ways to make the Crimson the best it can be.
My number one goal in this position is to maintain something that the Crimson has always upheld: telling the stories that matter. These are the stories that the students and the Samford community truly care about, those that raise awareness, call for change and spread true, important information.
My other main goal is to elevate and improve the foundation I am stepping into. The Samford Crimson exists to serve the Samford community, and there are many ways we are seeking to serve you better, hear from you more and make the Crimson the place you turn to for news regarding this university.
As I step into this role, I want to remember the legacy that’s set before me. The Crimson began to be a student-run publication 101 years ago and has run continuously since 1925.
The Editors-in-Chief who I have known personally have all inspired me in different ways. Harper taught me freshman year what good journalism is, when I had zero experience. Andrew taught me what leadership looks like and how to have confidence in myself as a young News Editor. Sydney has taught me about collaboration and having the tenacity to do journalism the right way when it’s difficult.
I hope to take what I have learned from these previous EIC’s to make the Crimson the best it can be in the coming year. A year from now when I’m writing my farewell graduation letter, I hope to look back on a year marked by excellent reporting, a strong relationship with the student body and internal development of our lovely staff.
I hope the Crimson will continue for generations after I am gone, holding strong to these core principles, and I’m just grateful that I get to be a small piece of this great organization.
See you next year,
Your 2026-2027 EIC,
Kate Seaver
