In early July, a new account named “Samford Take Note” appeared on Instagram. In its first post, the page stated that its purpose was to highlight local creators, small businesses and independent artists on Samford’s campus. Since its creation, Take Note has posted 15 features of Samford students, including vocal artists, student led organizations, musicians and nail artists.
“We’ve found in the past that students often shy from talking about themselves, their achievements, or marketing themselves,” said the anonymous creators of Take Note via their Instagram account. “We wanted a way for students to be more confident in that and also get the recognition and following they deserve.”
The creators of Take Note stated they wished to remain anonymous to make sure that the focus of the page remains on the featured students. The creators said that their motto for Take Note is “This is for the students, we are just the messengers.”
To be featured on the page, Take Note accepts requests through DMs and takes recommendations on who to feature. Story posts are also made regularly to allow for student engagement and suggestions.
Edward Gurney, a senior with a focus in live sound engineering and audio production, was recently featured on the page after being recommended by his peers. Gurney stated that the process to be featured was kept simple, with him communicating with Take Note through Instagram DMs. Students who are featured are asked to provide a short synopsis about their endeavors and themselves, as well as several photos.
“Getting highlighted for the work I do behind the scenes is cool (since) not often do I get to be featured in such large ways,” Gurney stated.
Regarding their goals for Take Note, its creators stated that they wish for the page to keep growing and posting more students.
“We want all years, talents, businesses, careers, activities, achievements, clubs, and more,” the creators said, “We are here for the students to put themselves out there.”
