Samford University and the Student Government Association (SGA) have launched a new Traditions Council, bringing students from across campus together to protect the university’s longstanding traditions and help build new ones.
The council held its first meeting Wednesday, Oct. 14, where members began discussing its vision and what the group could look like moving forward.
“The Traditions Council is an effort between the university and SGA to preserve the traditions that make Samford special while creating new ones for future generations of Bulldogs,” said Lainey Pritchett, SGA president.
Pritchett developed the council alongside Dr. Michael Morgan, Assistant to the President. Together, they recruited students from different corners of campus to help identify, strengthen and expand upon Samford’s traditions.
The council represents a partnership between the administration and student leadership, giving students a direct voice in shaping how Samford’s traditions are kept and grown.
Its work centers on three goals: recognizing the traditions students already hold, reinforcing the ones that matter most and adding new ones that could carry on for years to come.
For Pritchett, the goal reaches beyond any single event or custom.
“Ultimately, I hope this initiative helps foster a deeper sense of community and pride in Samford by creating traditions that students cherish throughout their time here and carry with them long after graduation,” Pritchett said.
That long view includes not only current students but also alumni and the students who will come after them.
“I want Samford to be a place students are proud to return to, with meaningful traditions they can share with future generations,” Pritchett said.
The idea of traditions passed down from one class of Bulldogs to the next sits at the center of the council’s mission, which pairs pre serving what already exists with creating something new for students who have not yet arrived on campus.
The council is still in its early stages, with its first meeting focused on setting a vision rather than announcing specific plans.
