Musician Liz Vice will visit Samford on Feb.18 from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. in the Howard Room. Those who attend will be able to have lunch and conversation with Vice to gain insight about her musical career.
According to her website, after starting her career through film and video, she accidentally found herself behind a microphone. Her music is a combination of gospel, R&B and soul. This not only makes her music different but gives it a timeless feel.
Vice first became attracted to music through her mother singing and from listening to her favorite soundtracks.
“Every morning growing up, she was awakened by her Mother’s voice singing ‘rise and shine and give God the glory,’” her website says. “She also found herself frequently stealing away to the basement to dance and lip-sync songs from the radio, and soundtracks from her favorite films.”
Vice even taught herself how to play the piano.
“At the age of 19 Vice’s health declined,” according to her website, “and she found herself on hemodialysis for the next three years. Her illness left many scars on her body including those from surgery on a fistula (an abnormal connection between organs).”
Vice eventually received a kidney transplant and was able to recover. Even though her life was changed by this event, it led to a time of healing and perspective.
After her recovery, Vice started to attend a local church and felt a calling to sing. Even though Vice suffered from stage fright, she knew that she could not let fear stop her from this calling.
Since then, Vice has had many live and musical performances and has been featured at several magazines, radio stations and events.
“She has been praised and featured by Oregon Public Broadcasts’ One Song, NPR’s World Cafe, Mountain Stage, eTown, NPR’s Weekend Edition, Relevant Magazine, and more,” according to her website.
Vice has been a featured artist in Portland in multiple events including Safeway Waterfront Blue Festival, Moon River, Forecastle and more.
Vice has also been able to perform with many artists including Joss Stone, Blind Boys of Alabama, Boz Scaggs, The Temptations, Rodriguez and more.
According to the Samford website, Vice will come to Samford to discuss her gospel, R&B, and soul-infused album, “There’s a Light.”
