The Dr. Chandler and Jane Paris Smith Opera Series will present “Opera Workshops” on April 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Bolding Studio. A variety of opera vignettes will be performed by the Art School’s award-winning students.

The performance marks the end of a class of the same name, offered every semester. The class is taken by a variety of majors within the art school, from worship to music education to grad students.

“‘Opera Workshops’ is always my favorite class because it pushes you outside of your comfort zone,” said senior vocal major Sara Litty. “Because everyone is from different majors, it gives us the chance to spend time with and form relationships with people we wouldn’t normally see or have class with. It’s such a supportive class where we can feel comfortable to try new and different things and laugh,” said Litty.  “This is the class where I have learned the most about performing.”

The workshop has something for everyone of different music tastes, experiences with opera and even languages.

“It’s a good way to be introduced to opera without having to watch the whole opera,” said Litty. “Some of the scenes are absolutely hilarious while there’s a French scene of forbidden love and an Italian scene with a nun that is hopeful for forgiveness and redemption.”

The numbers come from different operas and plays including: “Trouble in Tahiti,”  “Street Scene,” “Into the Woods,” “Manon” and “Sour Angelica.”
