As the Samford baseball team continues to push through the fall season, the Bulldogs are taking advantage of challenging competition, developing new talent and building team chemistry in preparation for the spring.
With fall matchups against Ole Miss and Troy already behind them and LSU coming up, the Bulldogs are using these opportunities to evaluate their strengths and identify areas of weakness.
Head coach Tony David emphasized the importance of fall baseball in preparing his team for the challenges ahead in the spring, especially with 21 returning players and 17 new players on the roster.
David said the team has shown promising progress already, especially with its depth and the opportunities younger players have experienced against strong competition.
“We’ve got what I believe by far the most depth we’ve ever had, position player-wise,” David said.
Senior catcher Cade Carr also shared that perspective as he emphasized how competing against bigger and unfamiliar opponents helps players get an idea of where they stand.
“When guys are coming in and you’re playing each other, you really don’t know what you’ve got until you play somebody else,” Carr said. “When you do play Ole Miss and you are able to compete at a high level, it’s something where you just are going to build the confidence and the culture.”
Beyond competition, fall baseball has provided opportunities for the Bulldogs to strengthen relationships and develop leadership within the team.
David believes those relationships are important and essential to the team’s success, especially during challenging games.
“I think closer teams are better in close games,” David said.
Redshirt senior outfielder Luke Boykin highlighted the importance of spending time together both on and off the field, especially as returning players welcome in new teammates.
“We kind of just try to build a positive experience in the locker room and on the field,” Boykin said.
As one of the team’s veteran players, Carr has accepted his leadership responsibilities with the new players.
“I’m just trying to set an example. I’m more of a lead by example kind of guy,” Carr said.
For Carr, catching also provides an opportunity to connect with teammates across the roster, allowing him to develop relationships with both pitchers and hitters.
“I really like the catcher position because I get to know the whole team,” said Carr.
He emphasized that building trust with pitchers is especially important when facing difficult moments during games.
“Building that relationship makes it a lot more personal,” said Carr.
While the Bulldogs continue developing their chemistry, their attention continues to focus on improving before the spring season.
Boykin emphasized that fall baseball is less about immediate results and more about long-term growth.
“It’s not exactly result based. It’s more of, you know, just trying to get better as a player and as a teammate,” Boykin said.
Looking ahead, coach David expects the Bulldogs to showcase their offensive strength, consistency on defense and pitching depth. These skills, the experienced leadership, and developing talent can help continue to contribute the team’s success.
“It’s a standard, I think, that they want to meet, and not a burden that they have to live up to,” David said
Coach David describes the team’s offensive philosophy as “blunt force trauma,” emphasizing an aggressive approach with the main focus of getting each ball to and over the fence.
Carr shared that excitement, pointing out the team’s potential for power hitting and increased speed on the bases.
“I think this could be another year where we have a lot of power and a lot of homeruns shown throughout our lineup.” Carr said.
With experienced leadership, a promising roster, and valuable fall competition, the Samford Bulldogs are working hard towards another successful spring season.
For these Bulldogs, the fall is more than preparation, it is an opportunity to set the foundation and show Samford fans what to look forward to in the spring.
